Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish vacation commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem through the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. It’s also often called the Pageant of Lights or the Feast of Dedication.
Hanukkah is widely known by lighting a menorah, a candelabra with 9 branches, one for every evening of the vacation. The menorah is lit on the primary evening of Hanukkah and an extra candle is added every evening till all 9 candles are lit on the final evening. Hanukkah can also be celebrated by consuming conventional meals similar to latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts).
